“I Like ‘Em Big And Stupid” by Julie Brown

If you heard this track on FunHouse Radio, it was off the LP Trapped In The Body Of A White Girl. I have a copy of the 1987 release in my vinyl collection. It was her second full length album. The track had been previously released as single in 1983. The song was featured in the movie Earth Girls Are Easy in 1988.

I remember Julie Brown most for her music, valley girl character and her Madonna parodies. Other may remember that her music was featured on The Dr Demento Show.

She’s done more than comedy music.

Checking out her Wikipedia reveals that she has had a surprisingly storied career in show business. She’s been in movies like Attack of the 5 Ft. 2 In. Women. She’s appeared in TV Shows like The Middle & Happy Days, She’s even voiced cartoon characters for Animaniacs!

July 4th is Alice In Wonderland Day. The occasion is celebrated by Lewis Caroll fans around the world, but especially in England. Why July 4? According to his diary, July 4th 1862 was the day he started telling his rabbit-hole stories to Alice Liddell and her sisters.

This Acid-Rock classic is all about Carol’s famous novel.

From what I can tell, the vocals are live. In fact her performance is sublime. I think the music however is from the studio recording. The rest of the band is pantomiming. Things like this were common on 1960s TV.

“Square Dance Rap” by Sir Mix-A-Lot

Today is American Redneck Day. Y’all ready to get busy? I’m crazy therefore this was the first song that came to mind for the occasion.

Sir Mix-A-Lot had an album and singles out on the scene long before “Baby Got Back”. His album Swass came out in 1988 on the strength of their single “Posse on Broadway” which was not a a comedy track like this one. I had the album on cassette.

“Square Dance Rap” was actually released as a single. I first heard the song on the radio but was a different mix. The version that appeared on the album had some editing done to it that makes it a little more goofy.

My fifth grade teacher managed to get our class to square dance back in 1985. Square dancing was really a thing in American culture, even as recently as the 1980s. The photo above was found on this great article about the square dancing fad. It’s from 1986 and shows an Ohio square dance club enjoying one of their twice monthly dances.

“Blame Canada” by Robin Williams LIVE at The 1999 Oscars

This was supposed to be the song of the day for yesterday. July 1 is Canada Day and this time it’s actually Canada’s fault that we are a day late posting this blog.

Blame Canada. Yesterday several fans from Canada decided to send up compliments on Discord. They kept distracting me with all the nice things they kept saying about the station. I was supposed to be getting my work done but Canada decided to interrupt me. I can’t help it. It’s Canada’s fault!

The video on this page looks like it came from a VHS tape of the live program. I have never seen a professional release of this. I hope they don’t take it down. I’ve been a Robbin Williams fan for most of my life. I was very sad to learn of his death.

“Camera” by Karl Bartos

Today is National Camera Day. I can’t think of a more perfect song to mark the occasion.

You may remember Karl Bartos from his work with the band Kraftwerk. This track comes from Karl’s 2005 solo album Communication. The entire album is freaking great. You can really hear how he must have influenced Kraftwerk and vice versa.

It’s hard to get a physical copy because it was released in Germany, UK, and Japan only, in limited numbers. Sometimes the CD is listed for $60 or more on auction sites. I have the UK version on CD.

Knock-Off “Muppets” go metal to tell the world about their arithmetic angst. You know it’s frustrating when you can only count to four (unless you are a punk-rock drummer). The band called Psychostick made this hilarious parody of of “Bodies” by Drowning Pool. Rock on!

“Ad Infinitum” by The Stupendium, Spamton G Spamton’s Theme from Deltarune

I asked people to name a funny techno song. This is one of the first suggestions to slide in. I loved it right away. Salesmen are often pretty slimy. Con artists are even worse. I love it when market mania is mocked. I love satire. The video is great too. More please.

The Stupendium is a musician, animator and content creator, creating weird, wonderful and usually incredibly nerdy songs and animations.

This song is part of a Video series, Toby Fox’s Deltarune. The song is rapped/narrated by a character from the series called Spamton G. Spamton. The character has become a popular subject of memes.

Thank you Stupendium. I can feel the cash vibes flowing through me. I just know FunHouse Radio will soon receive a windfall of investments in the near future!

“Kiss” by Tom Jones & Art Of Noise (Prince cover) – The 14th Most Danceable Song Of All Time!

Today is National Kissing Day. Can you think of a more appropriate song for the occasion?

We love covers here. Who better to cover than Prince? This track was released back in 1988 only two years after the original. It reached high positions in the global pop charts and as such remains Art of Noise‘s biggest hit. They also received an MTV Music Video Award.

After recording a number of country-pop style tracks, Welsh singer Tom Jones made a left-field decision to cover “Kiss”. It ended up reviving his career.

WalesOnline did a study using Spotify data back in 2016. Jone’s “Kiss” was rated the 14th most dance-able song of all time. The caveat is that about 8% of all pop music does not appear on Spotify. That beat out Daft Punk who came in at 18 with “Around The World”.
